MÖW is an exciting organic house artist who is back with a new EP called Hayyah. Not only does it have three original tracks, there is also a tantalising remix by Hot Oasis.
The original tracks tap into MÖW’s Egyptian heritage, while also taking influence from oriental and Arabic cultures. It’s a dynamic release that fuses electronic sounds and live instruments, and there are also exquisite vocal performances adding to the spellbinding vibe.
It is out on the Sol Selectas record label run by Sabo, and it’s an imprint that MÖW has contributed to in the past. He already featured a track on the label’s Summer Sol VIII compilation, but this is his first solo EP, adding to a catalogue that also includes other record labels such as Cosmic Awakenings, Pipe & Pochet, and Harabe.
Hot Oasis is on remix duty, and he’s no stranger to Sol Selectas, but has also worked with other record labels such as Bar 25 and Stil vor Talent. His music combines Arabic melodies and traditional instruments with melodic synths and riveting percussion.
“Hayyah” opens the EP with a trippy intro played on a Mizmir Baladi, then the main groove has a throbbing bassline, shuffling drums, and striking vocals by Nass Makan. “Ya Habayeb” is a powerful track utilising the oriental Bayat scale, it has an upbeat groove, and an emotive male vocal adding to the joyous vibe. Hot Oasis’ remix of “Ya Habayeb” alters the track’s structure, and adds some extra synths to create indie dance undertones. Last on the release, “Disco Saba” makes use of the traditional Saba scale from Arabic folk-law, and it has an energetic arpeggio, augmented by melodies played on a Zurna and Mizmir.
Overall, it’s a well-rounded EP that has a hot and humid sound, and it’s perfectly timed for the summer party season.
