In this quick-fire interview, we catch up with DJ/Producer Hotboxx to reflect on his experiences and highlights from 2023. From memorable festival performances at Miami Music Week and ADE, to collaborations with fellow Producers and friends and creative insights, he shares his thoughts on the past year’s musical journey and what he enjoyed and learn from it.
What was your favorite track or release of your own from 2023, and why?
Honestly, each of them have a unique style and I really was happy with my releases for 2023 tough to pick a favorite, but the one I play out most often when I spin is ‘What is House,’ I think it has a balance of groovy but also a little twist of dark club music, so for the club it has been my favorite to play.
Name one festival or event you performed at, or attended in 2023 that left you in awe of the crowd’s energy.
As far as the crowds energy, I had the opportunity to play some events for Miami Music Week, that definitely had an amazing vibe and people were dancing, I also had the chance to play at Floyd Miami, which is my favorite venue in Miami, so that was a bucket list venue that I was able to play this year, which was amazing. ADE was another festival I had the chance to play a showcase at, and was honestly amazed by everything about the event and festival, it really is the best overall party I’ve been too, an amazing experience at ADE. And lastly, an unexpected city that I had the chance to play in was Nashville, and they brought incredible energy, the crowd was amazing, honestly.
Which collaboration with another artist in 2023 stands out as a personal highlight?
Really, I had 3 that collabs that I was thankful and grateful to have released, starting with ‘Wanna Know Something About Ya EP’ that I did with Vampire Sex and Abuekev. I love working with those guys, and the energy everyone brings to the table. The groovy high-energy single I released with Unkwnet was the first collab with him, and won’t be the last, had a blast making that track. And, of course, the many collabs with my boy Flynn Nolan, Flynn and I got a ton of music stashed away, so many more with him on the way too.
Can you share a memorable moment from a fan interaction or message you received in the past year?
Honestly, there were a few but what really stood out to me was people reaching out in person or on social media, telling me they’re playing my tracks or genuinely complimenting me on a release of mine. It really felt good to know the music is being spread and people like the sound, and are playing it and really enjoying it. It’s an awesome feeling to know the tracks have gotten to a point where people really enjoy them and bigger DJs are downloading and playing the tracks.
What’s the most played song in your personal music library from 2023 that wasn’t your own?
I would have to check which is the most played individual track, but as far as artist I know that Mallin was my most listened to artist. His groovy Minimal tracks are amazing I really love his production and enjoy listening to his tracks.
Tell us about a unique or unexpected source of inspiration that fueled your creativity in 2023.
Random samples lol, to be honest, just grabbing a clip from a show or sketch, things I wouldn’t expect to sound good and they brought dope vibes to the tracks, so that was definitely some unique sources that pushed the records to the next level, and also releasing more tracks with me singing, I really pushed myself to make more original vocals and use a talent I usually leave hidden for no real reason.
Name one piece of gear or software you couldn’t live without in the studio last year.
Might be basic but Kickstart by Nicky Romero just makes the sidechain process so quick and easy, and keeps the creative process flowing very well, I love that plug in. Also shout out to Ableton, because what they’ve done lately, really helps me move through projects quickly and makes the process so seamless.
Share a favorite memory from a behind-the-scenes moment while touring or producing in 2023.
ADE alone had so many, from meeting legends I’ve looked up to since I was a kid, to attending exclusive small events of people who really love the music or are part of the scene. It truly is an immersive experience, and being able to participate as an artist this year, was amazing and inspiring. Also, with moments in the studio with my friends creating, there are too many funny memories to name but those moments and memories creating music with other people are some of my favorites.
What’s the most meaningful lesson or takeaway you gained from your experiences in the music industry last year?
Stay the Path, even if I think I’m spinning my wheels at times, keep creating, keep trying to get better, keep trying to promote and spread the music and the scene, help other artists and keep pushing for bookings. If you keep doing these things the universe will reward you and things will fall into place.
If you could sum up the essence of your musical journey in 2023 in just three words, what would they be?
Chaotic, fun, and innovative.
