As Cody Chase continues to carve his path in the Electronic Music scene, his December release, ‘Like This,’ offered yet another deep dive into his creativity and evolving artistry, allowing listeners a further glimpse into his innovative sonic world and the direction of his sound. Today, he joins us, sharing the behind-the-scenes journey of creating this dynamic track in this exclusive interview. From inspiration to production techniques and the challenges of balancing simplicity with complexity, this interview takes a closer look at how ‘Like This’ reflects Cody’s current sound and vision, exploring the production process and his hopes for the future.
Hi Cody, how are you?
I’m doing fantastic, thank you! Life has been a beautiful whirlwind lately. Between preparing for a series of shows, and pushing myself creatively in the studio, I’ve been keeping busy—but it’s all incredibly fulfilling. I feel like I’m in such an exciting chapter of my life and career, and I’m grateful for every step of the journey.
‘Like This’ has a hypnotic, evolving sound. What was the inspiration behind the track’s concept and direction?
The concept for ‘Like This’ really came from a desire to create something that would immerse listeners completely—a track that evolves in layers while maintaining a hypnotic groove.
I was inspired by those late-night moments on the dance floor where the music takes on a life of its own, and you feel like you’re part of something bigger. It’s that sense of being drawn in deeper with every beat that I wanted to capture.
With ‘Like This,’ I focused on creating a track that feels alive and dynamic, where every element—no matter how small—adds to the overall atmosphere. It’s about finding the balance between energy and restraint and building a journey that pulls people in from the very first kick.
The track opens with a steady kick, punchy motif, and vocal layer—did you start with this idea during production, or did it develop later in the process?
This track actually started with the motif and vocal layer—they were the foundation from the very beginning. I was experimenting with vocal samples and stumbled on something that felt raw and hypnotic. Once I combined that with the motif, the direction of the track became clear. The steady kick and groove were built around those elements, almost as if they were supporting characters to the main idea.
As I developed the track, that opening motif became a guiding thread. It allowed me to add layers and build tension while keeping the vibe consistent. Starting with those core ideas gave me a solid foundation to work from, and I think it shows in the way the track progresses naturally, almost effortlessly, from one section to the next.
The spoken vocal adds a unique touch. How did you choose it, and what role would you say it plays in the overall feel of the track?
The vocal came from a long session of digging through samples and experimenting with different ideas. When I found it, I knew immediately that it had the right vibe—it felt mysterious, intimate, and just a little bit edgy. I wanted something that didn’t overpower the track but added a human touch, almost like a conversation happening in the background of the groove.
For me, the vocal is what ties everything together. It adds personality and gives the track a focal point amidst all the evolving layers. It also helps create a sense of space and texture, drawing listeners in and holding their attention as the track builds and shifts. Without it, the track might feel more abstract, but the vocal gives it a sense of identity and purpose.
Can you share some details about the production techniques or tools you used to shape the synth textures and sound palette in ‘Like This’?
A lot of the synth work in ‘Like This’ involved layering different sounds to create depth and movement. I used Diva for its rich, analog-style tones, particularly for the bass and lower-mid elements, which gave the track a warm, grounded feel. Serum was my go-to for sharper, more modern sounds, and it really helped bring some of the higher textures to life.
I also spent a lot of time on automation to keep the synths feeling alive. Tweaking filters, panning, and effects in real-time added a sense of evolution to the track, making sure no two bars felt exactly the same. Granular synthesis played a role as well, especially for the atmospheric elements, which added a subtle unpredictability.
My goal was to create a soundscape that feels immersive and constantly shifting, keeping the listener engaged from start to finish.
How important is the groove when creating a track like ‘Like This,’ and how did you refine it to make it so impactful?
The groove is definitely central to a track like ‘Like This.’ It’s the foundation that everything else is built on, and it’s what keeps people moving and connected to the music.
I spent a lot of time refining the interplay between the kick and bassline, making sure they worked together seamlessly to create that irresistible bounce. The percussion was just as important—I added subtle layers and variations to keep the rhythm dynamic and engaging. Refining the groove was a process of trial and error. I tested different patterns, adjusted the swing, and played with timing until everything felt perfectly locked in. It’s a delicate balance—you want the groove to feel natural and effortless, but there’s actually a lot of detail that goes into making it work. I think the end result is something that draws you in and makes you want to move, which is exactly what I was aiming for.
When you test a track like this live, do you find it changes the way you tweak the production in the studio?
For sure. Testing a track live is one of the most important steps in the process for me. It’s like a reality check—you get to hear how it translates on a big system and see how the crowd reacts. Sometimes, things that sound great in the studio don’t quite hit the same way in a live setting, and that feedback is invaluable.
For ‘Like This,’ I tested it during a few sets and noticed that the second drop wasn’t hitting with enough impact. Back in the studio, I reworked the build-up, added more tension, and adjusted the low-end to make it punchier. It’s all about fine-tuning the details to make sure the track works as intended in the environment it was made for.
What part of the production process for ‘Like This’ pushed you the most creatively or technically?
I’d say the biggest challenge was finding the right balance between simplicity and complexity. The magic of this track lies in its restraint but keeping it engaging throughout required a lot of creative problem-solving. I had to focus on how each element could evolve subtly without disrupting the overall flow of the track.
Technically, shaping the transitions was one of the trickiest parts. I wanted the energy to feel seamless as it built and released, so I spent a lot of time working on automation and effects. It was a real test of patience and attention to detail, but in the end, it taught me a lot about trusting the process and letting the music speak for itself.
Chasin’ Records has been the platform for this release. How does having your own label influence the way you approach your music?
Having Chasin’ Records has completely changed the way I think about my music. It gives me the freedom to take risks and focus on creating tracks that feel true to my vision. There’s no pressure to conform to external expectations, which allows me to explore ideas that might not fit into a more traditional framework. It’s incredibly liberating as an artist.
Beyond that, the label is a way for me to give back to the community and support other up-and-coming artists. It’s not just about releasing my own music—it’s about building a platform that fosters creativity and collaboration. I see it as an extension of my identity as a producer and DJ, and I’m excited to see how it continues to grow.
How does ‘Like This’ fit into your long-term vision for your sound and future releases?
‘Like This’ is a perfect reflection of where I’m headed with my music. It blends the hypnotic, groove-driven elements that define my style with a more refined approach to production. It’s about creating tracks that are not only effective on the dance floor but also stand out for their depth and personality. Looking ahead, I see this track as a blueprint for future releases. I want to keep exploring the balance between simplicity and complexity, pushing boundaries while staying true to the energy and vibe that resonate with my audience. ‘Like This’ is just the beginning, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next.
Looking ahead, what can fans expect from you next? Can you tell us about what you aim to focus on in 2025?
Fans can expect a lot of exciting things in the near future—new music, bigger live shows, and some collaborations I’ve been working on behind the scenes. I’m aiming to elevate every aspect of my career in 2025, from my performances to my production.
I want my sets to be more immersive and interactive, creating experiences that people will remember long after the music stops. On the production side, I’ll be diving deeper into genre-blending and experimenting with new ideas that push the boundaries of my sound.
I’m also expanding Chasin’ Records, both with my own releases and by showcasing some incredible new talent. It’s going to be a year full of growth, exploration, and unforgettable moments, and I can’t wait to share it all with my fans!
